How does HAC work?
HAC = Hearing Aid Compatible.
The mobile phone generates a magnetic field. The hearing aid (HA) is in T mode. When the HA is in T mode the HA’s microphone is switched off, instead the HA picks up the magnetic field generated by the mobile phone. In this way disturbing noise from the environment is avoided, but not always interference from other magnetic fields.
If a HA is going to work properly one needs to:
1) generate a magnetic field that the HA can pick up
2) generate as little disturbance as possible, i.e. the phone shall not generate magnetic signals that interfere with the HA.
Why is HAC so difficult to get to work in mobile phones?
Mobile phones and hearing aids can result in various disturbing noises. The wireless telephone industry therefore has developed two types of standards for mobile phones that are HAC - Hearing Aid Compatible. It’s worth noting that these standards are not alike. The European HAC standard is less demanding than the American FCC HAC rating. This means that a product which is HAC according to the European standard might still be perceived as noisy and uncomfortable by the user. Therefore to offer maximum hearing comfort Doro has chosen the FCC HAC standard, which eliminates these problems – unless the hearing aid is too old or damaged to function properly.
What is the difference between T3/M3 and T4/M4?
T = consider both the magnetic field generated for the HA to pick up, and the disturbing magnetic signals that interfere with the HA.
M = only consider the disturbing signals that interfere with the HA.
The T/M rating is from T1 – T4 and M1 – M4. But in theory T3 – T4 and M3 – M4 are the acceptable ratings.
Doro PhoneEasy® 334gsm, 338gsm and 345gsm reach T3/M3 and Doro PhoneEasy® 410gsm reaches the highest standard T4/M4.
